Lesson Structure
I believe learning happens best when you are comfortable in your environment and relaxed enough in my company to be able to think and speak freely. I like to encourage a logical problem-solving approach to increase a genuine understanding of the skills needed for proactive road use. Since everybody's learning journey is unique, lessons are completely tailored to your needs, and if you choose to take driving lessons with me, I feel privileged to take that journey with you.
Here is an example of what a lesson with me could look like:
The Introduction
If it is your very first lesson, or we are beginning a new topic, we will spend some time finding out what you may already know and what skills you already have that we can build on.
The Recap
We always take some time at the beginning of each lesson to recap the previous lesson - what we did, what we were hoping to achieve, what worked, what skills were developed, and what might need some further practise and development. The recap not only allows continuity between lessons, but also helps to embed those skills into the long-term memory, so they can be recalled when needed into the working memory. The more these skills are recalled, recapped, or practised, the more learning is reinforced, by strengthening the neural pathways between long-term memory and working memory. (And that's as 'sciencey' as I'm going to get - promise!)
The Goal
We then set a goal to work on - what is the desired outcome for this lesson? Or for the next few minutes? What do you realistically hope to achieve? What skill or skills do you hope to master?
The Plan
How are you going to achieve your goal? How can I best help you to get there? What is going to be a suitable practise area for this plan? We make a plan together, look at the options available, any obstacles we may need to overcome, the risks and other factors involved, and figure out the best and safest way to proceed.
We make frequent checks on our progress throughout the lesson. What is working? What is holding us back? Has anything else happened that means we need to divert from the original plan or goal? Have we achieved our ideal outcome? If not, what needs to change to get us there? Or if so, then what does the 'next level' look like? How can we make things a bit more challenging?
The Summary
At the end of each lesson, we take some time to summarise and reflect on the learning that took place, and make some brief notes in preparation for our next session. These notes then form the basis of our recap at the beginning of our next session, and are always accessible through the Total Drive app we use to record lessons and progress. A lot can happen in a week, so taking the time to read these and remind yourself of the previous lesson before coming to your next lesson will greatly aid the continuity and flow of lessons, which ultimately helps to speed up the learning process.
