Automatic Tuition
I teach in an electric car for learners working towards an automatic licence. It's a modern way to learn that keeps car control as simple as possible, allowing you to put more focus on the road ahead. For more about automatic vs manual, see my FAQ.
With an emphasis on proactive road use and road safety, the syllabus starts with the development of good car control, and moves on to mastering the 5 core driving skills across all topics. ℹ️
These five skills underpin every aspect of driving:
🛞 Car Control
👀 Awareness
🔮 Anticipation
💬 Planning & Communication
🎯 Judgement
Topics covered by the syllabus include:
☆ Moving away, stopping, waiting & parking
☆ Use of road position & speed
☆ Reading the road
☆ Communicating with other road users
☆ Avoiding meeting traffic situations
☆ Lots of different junction types and configurations
☆ Town driving, residential roads, rural roads, country lanes, dual carriageways & slip roads
☆ The theory of motorway driving
☆ Protecting vulnerable road users
☆ Navigation, following road signs & sat nav
☆ Route planning & preparing for long journeys
☆ Driving in unfamiliar territory
☆ Developing eco-friendly (and wallet-friendly!) driving habits
☆ Vehicle safety checks & basic maintenance
☆ Driving in different weather conditions
☆ Driving in the dark
☆ Dealing with distractions & emotions
☆ ...and more!
While the syllabus remains the same for all, the course structure is very flexible. Lessons are tailored to your individual needs—we all learn differently and begin with different levels of knowledge and skill. This means the course is suitable for both complete beginners and partly trained students.
Working Hours
During term-time, my tuition hours are Monday–Friday, 09:30am – 5:00pm.
- Lessons are mostly scheduled during school hours, with some limited after-school availability until 5pm.
- I don’t offer regular lessons on evenings or weekends, but I always keep a late-night slot available for advanced students to gain experience of driving in the dark.
- Hours may vary slightly during school holidays.
Catchment Area
As I'm based in St Just, my catchment area mainly ranges between Land's End and Penzance, across West Penwith — occasionally reaching out as far as Hayle and Marazion. For learners even further afield, I can sometimes offer longer sessions of 3–5 hours.
Tests
I primarily use Penzance Test Centre for practical driving tests.
Due to the ongoing backlog, I’m also happy to take students to tests at Camborne or Bodmin Test Centres, as long as they fall within my working hours.
As a DVSA-Approved Driving Instructor, I take my duty of care seriously — not only to you, but also to your future passengers and everyone else on the road. That’s why I encourage you to take charge of your learning journey by focusing on real-world driving skills, adaptability, and reflective thinking. My aim is to help you become a safe, proactive driver for life, with an attitude of continuous self-improvement.
No matter which test centre you choose, I will only take you to your test when we both feel confident that you are a competent, independent driver—ready and able to demonstrate your skills in any local test area.
Prices
Lessons are £50 per hour — if you're based near St Just, feel free to ask about my ☆ locals' discount! ☆
Book lessons as you go, reserve a regular weekly slot, or build your own intensive — whatever suits your goals and your schedule (subject to availability).
- Sessions are 2, 3, 4, or 5 hours. ℹ️
- We’ll often begin with 2 hour lessons to build core skills locally. As your confidence grows, longer sessions (3–5 hours) become essential to tackle out-of-area topics like dual carriageways, complex junctions, route-planning, and driving in unfamiliar areas.
- Need help budgeting for longer sessions? Ask about proactive payment plans to build credit in advance. ℹ️
2 and 3 hour sessions include any short comfort breaks as needed within the booked time.
4 and 5 hour sessions include a midway break (around 45–60 minutes) at no extra cost. This break is in addition to your paid lesson time — you still receive the full 4 or 5 hours of tuition.
These longer sessions are a great-value way to maintain focus and energy while allowing for deeper, more immersive learning.
CloseLessons are paid in advance—weekly or monthly. Some learners choose to pay a little extra each time to build credit for longer or extra sessions later on. It’s a great way to spread the cost and avoid stress when those bigger lessons come up.
Examples:
- Sarah has weekly 2 hr lessons but pays for 2½ hrs, building up 30 minutes of credit each week.
- Steve pays for 2 hr lesson each week by standing order, but occasionally skips one with notice—banking 2 hrs credit each time.
- Danny begins with semi-intensive lessons. He pays for 20 hrs monthly, but usually takes 16 hrs of lessons, saving around 4 hrs credit per month. Once his test date is booked, he intends to learn as intensively as possible.
Unused credit is always refundable.
